Drug Offenses

Drug OffensesNorth Metro-Atlanta Area Drug Offense & Prescription Drug Fraud Lawyer

Criminal drug charges do not simply involve drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and meth (methamphetamine). Often these charges involve the illegal purchase (including “doctor shopping”), use, or sale of prescription drugs such as Oxycontin and Vicodin. Doctors routinely hand out prescriptions for these narcotic pain killers without fully understanding the addiction that follows. People who have never been in trouble with the law can find themselves facing DUIs (often called DWI) and felony drug charges.

We are The Law Offices of Jeffrey S. Williams, representing clients accused of possessing or selling illegal drugs or controlled substances without a prescription in North Metro-Atlanta area, including Alpharetta, Cumming, Marietta, and Roswell.

Protect Your Future

If you are convicted of a drug crime, you will be tagged with a criminal record that will follow you for the rest of your life. A drug conviction can affect the status of your driver’s license, as well as your ability to find future employment, since background checks are routine for most employers. If you are a student, a drug conviction can result in the loss of student loans. Our goal as your defense lawyer is to keep you from suffering life-changing consequences that result from a drug arrest.

In some cases, drug offenses can be resolved under one of Georgia’s First Offender programs, also known as Conditional Discharge Statutes. This means that you will not go to jail and, if you satisfy probation, you can have the charge altered on your record. The legal term is “nolle prosequi.” Nolle prosequi is a Latin term meaning “we [the prosecution] shall no longer prosecute”.

In other cases, it may be possible to defeat the state’s charges. As your lawyer, we will examine every detail of the state’s case to determine if the state violated your constitutional rights. For example, if the search and seizure were illegal, the drug evidence can be suppressed and the case dismissed.

DUI/Drug court: As a panel member of one the local county DUI/Drug courts, we have seen how it’s possible to fight addiction. If you are facing two or more DUI/DWI convictions, let us help you through the process. Many times Drug Court can keep a felony off your record.
